“Joining Opportunities for Non-Chinese Youngsters” Chinese Learning Support Programme (Phase 3), supported and funded by Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) and the Language Fund. It has now been running for five years. The programme has served over 4,500 members from non-Chinese-speaking families, connecting with 31 schools and recruiting 200 volunteers to participate.
This video takes you into the life of non-Chinese-speaking student Manelisi. Through interviews with his parent, teacher, and principal, we witness Manelisi’s transformation after joining the programme. The video captures many touching moments, including him becoming a little teacher, helping his mother learn Cantonese words for food, the warm moments he reads Chinese books with his mother, and joyful clips of him interacting with local classmates and engaging in school life. His Chinese language and social skills have both improved, allowing him to integrate into the life in Hong Kong with greater confidence.
As the social worker mentioned, the programme aims to provide an enjoyable learning platform to build confidence and a sense of accomplishment among non-Chinese-speaking children. We hope these little seedlings can thrive through the support of the community and schools, and in the future, soar high in Hong Kong, leveraging their Chinese language abilities and unique backgrounds for broader development opportunities.
